Can I have multiple maps on a Garmin device?
Yes, you can have multiple maps on a MicroSD card or the internal storage on many Garmin models, these include:
- All Oregon models, all Montana models, all GPSMap62,64,66,68 models, all Etrex 20,22,25,30,32,35 models, many Edge models (except the 605 and 705).
- All Fenix 5X, 5 Plus (all models), 6X and all 6/6s models that are either a Pro or Sapphire model, and related smartwatches that support on device maps, including the ForeRunner 945, Tactix Charlie & Delta, MARQ, etc. support multiple maps on the device.
- Older models such as the Etrex Legend/Vista/Venture (Cx or Hcx), the GPSMap60 (Cx or Csx), Zumo (most models) only support a single map on a card at a time. These older models also require the map filename to be GMAPSUPP.IMG (or one of a few other supported filenames), otherwise the map will be ignored and won't load and show.
However, even with models that do support multiple maps, there are some caveats:
- Each map needs to have a different internal map ID, otherwise they will fight and may cause the Garmin device to fail to boot. Not all maps are created with this capability. All Talkytoaster maps will co-exist with each other and any pre-loaded maps on the Garmin device.
- There are finite limits imposed by Garmin, these are individual map file size limits (<4GB) and total map tile limits (across all maps installed on the device).
- Having multiple maps enabled for the same area will cause issues; display problems, routing issues and this will also impact the battery (in some cases seriously impacting the normal battery run time). You should only have one active map for an area enabled at a time (per Activity Profile).
