Do the Talkytoaster maps use more battery than Garmin maps?
No, the Talkytoster maps do not seem to have any additional battery drain/impact than the Garmin supplied ones (and they almost certainly have less battery impact than the OS maps will); I've certainly not noticed it on my Fenix 5X, my Fenix 6x, my Oregon 300, 550 or 700 or my Etrex Legend Hcx, 20x, 25 or 30 models.
Our maps use the exact same file format as any other standard Garmin map, that being Garmin IMG map file format.
In fact I have never received any reports of increased battery drain in over 14 years of producing and offering these maps, and I've not experienced any extra drain when using the map myself.
