How do I enable USB Mass Storage Mode?

Some legacy Garmin outdoor handheld devices can be put into USB mass storage mode, turning the device into a card reader and allowing an inserted microSD card to be read by a computer. All modern Garmin devices support USB Mass Storage Mode, or USB Media Transport Protocol mode by default.

This card reader mode (USB Mass Storage  Mode) provides the ability to install detailed mapping to the device, in addition it provides the ability to locate active tracks that have been archived to the card.

While in mass storage mode, tracks, routes, waypoints and other files can be viewed on the computer. However, there is no access to any data stored on the device itself while in this mode.

This mode also allows any map on the MicroSD card installed in the device to be seen by BaseCamp, in the same way that more modern Garmin devices allow.

The following legacy Garmin devices can be placed into mass storage mode:

  1. eTrex Legend Cx
  2. eTrex Legend HCx
  3. eTrex Venture Cx
  4. eTrex Vista Cx
  5. eTrex Vista HCx
  6. GPSMAP 60Cx
  7. GPSMAP 60CSx
  8. GPSMAP 76Cx
  9. GPSMAP 76CSx
To put any of these legacy Garmin devices into mass storage mode, follow the instructions below:

Connect the device to the computer using the USB cable:

-> Go to the Main Menu
-> Select Setup
-> Select Interface
-> Select USB Mass Storage Mode

Your device will now create a drive on your computer so you can access the data on your microSD card.
