This is only required if you have an old Garmin model, such as:
Why? Simply because these older models only support a single map at a time, and it must be called GMAPSUPP.IMG or it won’t be seen.
There is a way to have multiple maps on a MicroSD card, but you will need to make the others invisible to the device. This means changing the filename extension to something other than .IMG (this hides it from the Garmin device).
To do this you will need to use a computer (Mac, Windows, ChromeBook, Linux, etc.)
Let me show you an example:
The first screen shot shows multiple maps on the MicroSD card, but only one of them is active and visible to the Garmin device (the GMAPSUPP.IMG file), the others are hidden from the Garmin device by changing the extension to .1 or in the example below it is .IMG.1 (a double extension).
Step 1. To switch to another map, in my example, from the current active map (GMAPSUPP.IMG) which is the British Isles map, first you will need to remove the existing GMAPSUPP.IMG file.
Step 2. Then you will need to select the map you want to use, and make a copy of it.
Step 3. Once that is done, change the name of the copy of the file to GMAPSUPP.IMG in other words RENAME the file (on Windows select the file, right-click and select ‘Rename‘ from the menu shown.
Then type in the new name GMAPSUPP.IMG and press Enter (the Return key) or just click outside of the edit box.
That’s it.
If you want to set a different map as the active one, simply repeat the steps above with the other map (making sure that you don’t delete the original backup copies, in my example the backuo copies are the ones with the .1 extension).
Please Note: Newer Garmin devices do not have this limit, you can have multiple maps installed and seen by them, no matter what they are named (as long as the file extension is .IMG).
