Thick Black Lines on Roads - Edge 1040, 840, etc.

If you are seeing wide black borders on the roads on your Edge 1050/1040 (and Edge 540/840) or Explore 2 then you will see something like the following:

This is NOT a fault of the map, but an issue (amongst others) that Garmin introduced in their firmware in the middle of May, 2024 (from Beta 21.14 and onwards [Edge 1040/840, etc.]). This causes all maps that use vector lines (instead of bitmap/raster) for roads, including (ironically) many of Garmin's own maps to be incorrectly displayed; it also apparently affects other style types and the rendering of text labels too (all incorrectly).

This is an issue that Garmin needs to fix, but in the meantime, myself and other map producers have found a workaround/fix to the road renders issue. Ironically it doesn't affect other line types (footpaths, bridleways, etc.)

UPDATE: It seems that Garmin in their wisdom has now retrofitted this bug/issue in the latest BETA Fenix 7,  Quatix 7, Tactix 7, Epix 2, Forerunner 965 firmware (amongst others).
Not sure if this will be fixed in the next BETA or production/release version, but as Gamin hasn't yet fixed the issue in the affected Edge firmware (reported to them over 3 months ago), I wouldn't hold my breath.

All our TT HD Topo/Topo Pro maps created as of the 1st of August, 2024 include this wide border fix as standard. The reasoning behind this change can be found on our blog here: https://talkytoaster.me.uk/latest-map-style-changes/

UPDATE2: It seems that Garmin have now fixed the issue in the latest BETA firmware for the Edge 1040/840/540 and possibly 1050 and Explore 2 models too; they have also fixed it in the latest BETA firmware for the Forerunner 965.

However, the issue is still in the 18.14 release firmware for the Fenix 7, Epix Gen 2, Quatix 7, etc. so until the issue is fully fixed in all affected models and the fixed firmware is released my maps will continue to use the fix I have for the wide border issues, etc.  It seems that the BETA 18.15 firmware version may have finally addressed this issue. It also appears that this bug has been included in the release firmware (11.59/11.60/11.64) for the Enduro 3 and Fenix 8 models!

Once all the affected models are updated with a fixed version (production) of the firmware, I will revert my maps back to using vector roads, etc.
