The download speed is not just dependent on our servers and internet connections, it is also dependent of your internet (broadband/mobile) connection. It may also depend on how you are connected to your broadband; if you use WiFi it may be slower and less reliable than a wired Ethernet cable from your router to your computer. See here for more guidance.
The service we use to serve files (downloads) is enterprise class and used by customers from multi-national organisations, industry, governments, education, military as well as small businesses and individuals. Download issues caused by these servers are very, very rare.
This file storage and delivery service we use is highly resilient and scalable (for load balancing and redundancy) and these will allow you to download the FREE or TT HD Topo, TT HD Topo Pro (aka TT 1:50K Look n Feel) paid for, or Subscription maps at speeds up to 7 MB per second. Any download issues are almost certainly not due to this service, but issues at your end. There is some guidance and advice on how to resolve/minimise download issues, in our Knowledge Base article here.
For example if your broadband/mobile download speed is only 1MB per second (10mbps), that is the highest you will get, likewise if you have a download speed of 10 MB per second (80mbps), then the maximum download speed you can get when downloading from my servers will be around 2 MB per second (up to 7MB per second, or better, with the new cloud file hosting).
However, this is also dependent on other factors/restrictions/traffic capping/shaping by your Internet Service Provider (ISP), server load, as well as if you are using Wifi or Ethernet (wired connection).
If you do not have a broadband connection (such as a dial-up modem) do NOT purchase downloadable maps from us, as you do not have a suitable Internet connection. If you do only have access to a dial-up internet connection, rather than full broadband, you could always use a friends/colleagues/neighbours broadband connection (with their explicit approval). You could even use the free/paid for wifi at a hotel, cafe, or fast food restaurant (however this may be no better than your dial-up modem). One last option is to use an Internet cafe/shop.
