If you use the MTB Activity profile, there is a bug in it when used with any third party maps, such as my TT 1:50K Look n Feel ones, or the TT HD Topo or TT HD Topo Pro maps. The problem manifests itself in the map background being blue instead of the correct map base colour it is on almost every other Garmin device.
If you have the June, 2021 firmware (or later) the following instructions on any Edge model that supports this feature (Edge 530/820/830/1030, etc.):
Menu Button -> Activity profiles -> Select profile -> Navigation -> Map -> Classic (this will set the map to show as designed/intended to by the map creator; the Classic setting effectively disabled any map theme).
OR
Menu Button -> Activity profiles -> Select profile -> Navigation -> Map -> Appearance -> Map Theme -> Classic (this will set the map to show as designed/intended to by the map creator; the Classic setting effectively disabled any map theme).
Setting it to any other option will change the map colours as they work like a Map Theme does on a Fenix, and that's what map themes do, they change the way the map is displayed (colour, detail, etc.)! This should not affect any of the features, just leave the map as it was intended/designed to look (and how it looks on almost every other Garmin device).
On the Edge 1000, the fix is to select ‘Auto’ after Map.
For older firmware versions, please use these instrcutions instead:
To fix the issue on a Garmin edge 820/830 navigate to:
Menu Button -> Activity profiles -> Select profile -> Navigation -> Routing -> Routing Mode -> Change from Mountain Biking to Gravel cycling.
Restart the device and it loads fine and the map background will be as it should be.
You still get the mountain biking metrics as you keep the ride type to Mountain Bike.
On other models this may show up in a different way, lack of detail, etc. rather than a blue background.
Make sure that you only have single map enabled per Activity profile, or you will still have issues, as multiple maps are loading for the same area, and they will interfere with each other.
Also, to show ALL the available detail in our maps, make sure that the Detail level setting is set to the highest that the Edge (or other Garmin device) supports.
Let me be very clear, this is NOT an issue caused by the map, it is due to the Map Theme function in Garmin's firmware. If you follow the steps above and set the Map to Classic the map displays and works fine, as it does on every other Garmin device (including Fenix models that also have Map Themes).
