How do I update the map?

If you have purchased an Automatic Download for self install, you don't get access to updated versions  (as stated on the product page, as shown below):

"This is a one-off download version of the map and does NOT include any updates or versions of the map for direct use in BaseCamp on a PC or Mac, if you require updates or PC/Mac versions of the map please look at my Subscription offering instead."

You either need to purchase the map again (to get the newest version), or upgrade to a subscription.

If you have a subscription, then you can download the updated map or maps (which your subscription includes) as often as you want during your subscription period.

Updating the maps just requires the following steps to be carried out:

GPS Version
  1. Download the new version of the map to your computer.
  2. Delete the old copy of the map from the MicroSD card or internal storage (you must do this as otherwise you will end up with two copies of the same map on the card/internal storage and your device may fail to boot). This is the same regardless of where you get the maps from; Talkytoaster, other third party map creator, or even Garmin.)
  3. Unzip the zip file, and then copy and paste (or drag and drop) the updated map file (the .IMG file, not the .ZIP file) to the GARMIN folder on the MicroSD card or the internal storage of the device.
  4. Once completed, check that the device boots correctly and that it can see the updated version of the map (if it can't then you have not installed it correctly; please see the installation instructions for your device, available here.)
Dedicated BaseCamp Version (Windows)
  1. Download the new version of the BaseCamp (PC) map to your computer. Make sure that BaseCamp is not running.
  2. Unzip the zip file, and then copy and paste (or drag and drop) the content to the same folder on your Hard Disc/SSD; where you installed it previously. There is no need to delete the old files, simply allow the files to be overwritten.
  3. Once the copy is complete, start BaseCamp and verify that the updated version can be seen. If it can't then you have not installed it correctly; please see the installation instructions for your computer, available here.
Dedicated BaseCamp Version (Mac)
  1. Download the new version of the BaseCamp (MAC) map to your computer. Make sure that BaseCamp is not running.
  2. The downloaded ZIP file should automatically be extracted to a folder, once the download is complete. If not, simply double-click on it in Finder and it will extract the contents.
  3. Now, in Finder find the GMAPI file/folder, and double-click on it, then click on the install button. There is no need to delete the old files, the old map files will be overwritten (replaced) during the install.
  4. Once the install is complete, start BaseCamp and verify that the updated version can be seen. If it can't then you have not installed it correctly; please see the installation instructions for your computer, available here.
