What are the differences between the Map Styles you offer?

We offer two distinct map styles, for different types of usage:

TT HD Topo (aka TT 1:50K Look n Feel)
This one mimics the Garmin Discoverer map look for key features, such as footpaths, bridleways, cycleways, etc. but is based on OSM data. This map is recommended for walkers, cyclists and geocachers. It is not suitable for use as a sat-nav on roads as the routing is significantly different as it will route down footpaths, bridleways and other tracks as well as roads.

This map style is actually designed for off-road routing on purpose.

This map style offers the highest level of detail of any OSM based maps, often showing detail (where mapped) that would be only found on 1:25K or higher resolution maps. They may also contain some data you would never see on an OS or equivalent map.

This includes field boundaries, benches, stiles, gates, water points, etc. These maps contain contour data (10m intervals as standard).

There is also the TT HD Topo Pro versions of the maps, the only difference between the Pro and non-pro versions, is that the Pro versions also contain DEM (Digital Elevation Model) data.

DEM data is useful for those that are hiking, etc. in hilly or mountainous areas where elevation data can be shown on the elevation graph, and also if your Garmin device support DEM shading, this can be enabled to give a pseudo 3D hill shading effect. The TT HD Topo Pro versions are now available for many countries/regions/states, etc. More details on DEM and the benefits of it (including screen shots of what DEM shading, etc. will look like(, can be found here.

Standard Map

This one is my standard routable OSM based map. This style can be used for road navigation but only routes to street level (not Post Code). I also offer to create custom maps for other countries that use this style.

The FREE maps are no longer being offered, as of the 14th of April, 2023. Full details of why I have made this decision can be found on the FREE Maps Home Page (link below).

    • If the raw OSM map data is free why are you charging for the TT HD Topo maps?

The raw OSM map data is free (and I am one of the thousands of volunteers that help improve the raw map data all the time). However, maps based on OSM data are not all the same, or offer the same level of detail, features, routing capabilities, etc. ...
    • What is DEM, and why is it useful to have it?

Digital Elevation Model (DEM) data is only available in the TT HD Topo Pro maps. This offers not only embedded Digital Elevation Model data, but allows map shading (on supported devices) and 3D mode (on supported devices) and in BaseCamp. Full ...
