Please Note: The files we offer are served directly from a very reliable servers managed directly by Microsoft, not our own severs.
The service we use to serve files (downloads) is enterprise class and used by customers from multi-national organisations, industry, governments, education, military as well as small businesses and individuals. Download issues caused by these servers are very, very rare.
This file storage and delivery service we use is highly resilient and scalable (for load balancing and redundancy) and this will allow you to download the FREE or TT HD Topo, TT HD Topo Pro (aka TT 1:50K Look n Feel) paid for, or Subscription maps at speeds up to 7 MB per second. Any download issues are almost certainly not due to this service, but issues at your end.
First thing to check, is the ZIP file complete?
To do this if you unzip the ZIP file downloaded, it should contain more than a single file (usually 3 or 4 files). If it only contains one file, then the download is incomplete and you will need to download the file again, making sure that you follow the guidance below!
If you are using 7Zip, you can Test the archive to see if it is complete and valid (just click on the ‘Test’ icon when the ZIP is open in 7Zip).
You can do the same with WinZip (Unzip, Diagnostics), WinRar (Test), and many other ZIP handling applications. More details, including screen shots can be found here.
If you are having problems downloading the map, it is highly likely that the issue is at your end, please try the following:
- Make sure you have sufficient free space on the hard drive/SSD that you are downloading to (the storage in your computer).
- Only download to a computer (Windows, Mac, ChromeBook, Linux), not to a tablet or phone, as you will not be able to install the map to a MicroSD card or the internal storage of your Garmin via your tablet or phone. Our server will detect if you are trying to download to a mobile device, and block it.
- DO NOT try and download the ZIP file via mobile broadband or on a mobile device, only via a wired broadband and to your (personally owned) Windows PC, ChromeBook, Linux system or Mac.
- DO NOT download to a work/employer supplied computer, as you will have issues due to the employers security on the computer.
- We recommend downloading using either the Firefox or Chrome web browser (both are free and tend to be more reliable). We do NOT recommend the use Safari, Opera or Internet Explorer/Edge to download the ZIP file as you are more likely to have issues.
- If you are getting network timeouts or similar connection issues it is probably something at your end, so please try rebooting the router/modem and/or your computer.
- Make sure that your computer is not going to sleep during the download (as that will stop the download from completing)!
- If you are using Wifi, you may get issues as the signal will fluctuate depending on many factors (how many other devices are using the same Wifi hub at the same time, physical barriers between you and the router/wifi, etc.) For the best connectivity use a wired (Ethernet cable) connection to your router instead. Do not use mobile broadband as the coverage will be very spotty and unreliable for such a large download. Make sure that you are NOT streaming video or performing other network (Internet) intensive actions at the same time as trying to download the map file from our servers, as this will slow the download, or may cause the download to fail.
- DO NOT use any form of download accelerator or download manager as these will start multiple downloads at the same time, causing your download attempts to be used up straight away and saturating your Internet connection in the process.
- DO NOT use a VPN or Proxy you may have issues; if you are using a VPN or Proxy please try disabling it and then try the download again.
You can find details about the speed of the download that you can expect, here.
